Financing
You might not need savings to go solar.
Most NZ banks now offer green energy loans: low or zero interest lending specifically for solar, batteries and eco-friendly energy upgrades. Here’s how they work.
Green energy loans 101
The idea is simple.
A green energy loan spreads the cost of your solar system over time. Depending on your home, power use, and system size, your repayments may sit close to the savings you make on your power bill. The numbers are different for every home, that’s why we start with understanding your usage first.
Low (or zero) interest
Green energy loans are deliberately cheaper than normal borrowing, because banks discount the rate for qualifying eco-friendly energy upgrades.
Designed for green energy upgrades
Solar panels, batteries, heat pumps and EV chargers are all considered green energy home investments.
Through your own bank
You apply for pre-approval through your bank, and we will provide the design and quote for you to give to your bank for final lending approval. We’re not brokers and take nothing from the transaction
We provide the numbers
We’ll design your system, explain the costs, and give you all the important info you need.
Rates, caps and terms change and differ by bank, so always confirm current details with your lender.

Three common situations
Financing looks different depending on where you’re at.
You have a mortgage
The most common case. A green energy top-up on your existing home loan is usually the best value lending available for solar, and often the repayment sits near what solar saves you.
Usually the path: green energy top-up with your current bank.
You’re mortgage-free
You can pay outright and enjoy the fastest effective return, or borrow against the house at green energy rates if your bank allows if you’d rather keep savings liquid.
Usually the path: outright purchase, or a small secured green energy loan.
You’re retired
If you're at home using power during the day this can help you get greater value from solar, reducing how much electricity you need to buy from the grid.
Usually the path: right-sized system, outright purchase.

Financing FAQs
A personal or top-up home loan most NZ banks offer specifically for eco-friendly energy improvements: solar panels, batteries, heat pumps, insulation and EV chargers. They typically come with much lower interest than standard lending, sometimes zero for an initial period, because banks want to back emissions-reducing upgrades.
